Glossary and FAQ

Rentable expertise glossary

Rentable expertise is a capability a business can obtain without building and maintaining all of it in-house. AC Circuit helps buyers understand the different forms that capability can take before they choose a sourcing path.

Forms of rentable expertise

Marketing may call this "renting." The actual access arrangement may be a license, subscription, API usage agreement, service agreement, or human engagement.

Rentable expertise
A capability a business can obtain without building and maintaining all of it in-house. The practical arrangement may be a license, subscription, API usage agreement, service agreement, or human engagement.
Rentable alchemy
AC Circuit's marketing phrase for turning specialized know-how into a capability another business can use. Rentable expertise is the practical, search-friendly term.
MCP server
Software that uses the Model Context Protocol to expose tools, resources, or prompts to compatible AI applications. Authentication, permissions, hosting, and allowed actions still determine what it can safely do.Model Context Protocol introduction
AI skill / skill file
Instructions and supporting context that help an AI agent perform a repeatable task. In the Agent Skills specification, a skill is a directory centered on a SKILL.md file and can include scripts, references, assets, and other resources. A skill file alone is not automatically a complete, safe, or maintained business capability; it may still need tools, data access, testing, approvals, and an operating environment.Agent Skills specification
Workflow
A defined sequence of steps, decisions, integrations, and handoffs used to produce an outcome. A workflow may include AI prompts, skill files, APIs, MCP servers, software automation, and human review.
Blueprint / template
A reusable design, configuration, or implementation pattern that reduces the work needed to build a capability. The buyer still owns adaptation, validation, deployment, and maintenance unless those services are included.
API capability
A function or service a business or AI system can call through a documented software interface. Access depends on credentials, permissions, usage terms, availability, and integration work.
Human / fractional service
Specialized expertise supplied by a person, firm, agency, or fractional executive for a defined scope or period. The capability is accessed through an engagement rather than installed as software.
Capability bundle
A broader package combining one or more artifacts with execution context, instructions, evidence, quality controls, security requirements, and a maintenance path. A bundle can include skill files, workflows, MCP servers, APIs, templates, software, and human expertise.

Evaluate security and business risk

For security, inspect provenance, permissions, secrets, data handling, dependencies, runtime isolation, human approvals, maintenance, and incident history. A skill file alone is not automatically a complete, safe, or maintained business capability.

For business risk, consider data sensitivity, permission scope, autonomy, side effects, financial and legal impact, reversibility, human review, criticality, error detection, and maintenance dependency. A useful first classification is low, moderate, high, or not yet classifiable.

Frequently asked questions

Practical answers for owner-operators, remote teams, capability providers, and people designing AI-assisted procurement.

What is rentable expertise?

Rentable expertise is a capability a business can obtain without building and maintaining all of it in-house. The actual access arrangement may be a license, subscription, API usage agreement, service agreement, or human engagement.

What is rentable alchemy?

Rentable alchemy is AC Circuit's marketing phrase for specialized know-how packaged so another business can use it. Rentable expertise is the practical term used for search, comparison, and procurement.

What is an AI skill file?

An AI skill file contains instructions and context that help an agent perform a repeatable task. In the Agent Skills specification, a skill is a directory centered on a SKILL.md file and can include scripts, references, assets, and other resources. A skill file alone is not automatically a complete, safe, or maintained business capability; it may still require tools, data access, testing, approvals, deployment, and maintenance.

What is the difference between a skill, workflow, MCP, API, blueprint, and bundle?

A skill guides agent behavior; a workflow coordinates steps and handoffs; an MCP server exposes tools or resources through the Model Context Protocol; an API exposes callable software functions; a blueprint supplies a reusable design; and a capability bundle combines artifacts with the context, controls, evidence, and maintenance needed to use them together.

Should a business build, buy, license, rent, call, or hire expertise?

Compare the required outcome, time to value, total cost, control, integration effort, maintenance burden, security, and business risk. Build when ownership and differentiation justify the burden; use an external capability when speed, specialist knowledge, or lower operating overhead matters more. Rent is shorthand, not a promise about the legal form of access.

How should a business evaluate security?

Review provenance, creator or provider identity, permissions, secrets, data handling, dependencies, runtime isolation, human approvals, maintenance and end-of-life plans, plus incident and correction history. A listing or Source verified label is not a security assessment.

How should a business evaluate business risk?

Consider data sensitivity, permission scope, autonomy, side effects, financial or legal impact, reversibility, human review, business criticality, detectability of errors, and maintenance dependency. AC Circuit uses the plain-language bands low, moderate, high, or not yet classifiable when enough evidence exists to classify risk.

Can an AI Chief of Staff discover, interview, hire, manage, and pay for expertise?

An authorized AI Chief of Staff could eventually compare capabilities and coordinate governed procurement steps using business context, budgets, policies, and human approvals. AC Circuit does not currently authorize autonomous hiring, management, or payment; today its public records support human discovery and evaluation.

Is rentable expertise suitable for remote and global businesses?

Many digital capabilities can be evaluated and used across locations, which makes them relevant to remote teams and globally distributed owner-operators. Buyers still need to check language, time zones, support, data location, taxes, licensing, sanctions, and local legal requirements.

What does Source verified mean on AC Circuit?

Source verified means an AC Circuit editor checked the displayed source facts against linked official provider documentation or an official gallery. It does not mean AC Circuit operationally tested or endorsed the capability, verified security, performance, availability, or fitness, or obtained provider consent.
